WALD and Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey Met to Assess Opportunities for Collaboration

Established on the basis of human dignity, Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (HREI) aims to protect and promote human rights, to guarantee individuals’ right to equal treatment, prevent discrimination in the exercise of legally recognized rights and freedoms, and effectively fight against torture and ill-treatment and act as National Preventive Mechanism. Chairman of HREI Süleyman Arslan and World Academy for Local Government and Democracy (WALD) Chairman of the Executive Board Mehmet Duman convened in an online meeting on November 19, 2020.

In the meeting which mainly revolved around information about activities and organizational structure of the institutions, the Chairman of HREI Süleyman Arslan stated, “We care about the interinstitutional collaborations. In communities, it is very crucial as well as necessary to advocate for public and conduct activities to promote human rights.” WALD Chairman of the Executive Board Mehmet Duman, on the other hand, said, “First of all, I would like to express that we are quite pleased with this collaboration between WALD and HREI. Through the partipatory democracy approach, we can conduct valuable activities specific to city councils and deliver awareness and training programs in different cities in order to reinforce the human rights.”
